How to Never Run Out of Blog Ideas Again
Coming up with blog posts to consistently write about can be a pain depending on your topic and niche. Some areas I think have more to write about than others. With a bit of dedication though, you can consistently create content around any topic you want. It’s just a matter of some research, who your target group is, and what your end goal is.
Common Tips for Brainstorming
When coming up with blog post ideas, a great tip is to start with one word or topic and just start brainstorming a bunch of different ideas around that one idea. You can freewrite topic ideas and don’t worry about how silly or simple it might be.
Have a notebook or use the note app on your phone where you can save ideas as they strike. Using a notetaking app like Evernote can be a great way to save inspiration and ideas on the fly.
Inspiration can come in many forms such as images, social media posts, videos, podcasts, etc. Don’t discount your inspiration coming from unusual sources.
As always when writing blog posts and brainstorming ideas, using SEO by creating a list of keywords is a fantastic way of deciding what to write about. You can research those keywords and figure out the best way to phrase your topic to reach the maximum amount of readers. There is a lot of free tools and paid tools to help you accomplish this.
Not only that but reading your competition not only helps you understand what they’re doing well and what you can do better, but it helps you know what to write about. If they’re ranking high for something in Google, how can you rank higher for that as well.
Lists of my favorite resources and brainstorm ideas
In this blog post, I thought I would provide some lists of my favorite resources you can use no matter what your topic or niche is.
A lot of these resources are also great marketing opportunities so take a look at them if you’re not already on them!
Answer the Public
One of the best ways to find out what people are searching online and related keywords. By using Answer the Public, you can understand what your target users are looking for and the ways you can find them.
Right RELEVANCE
You can search about any topic on Right Relevance and discover the latest news and trends about it. I love that it includes influencers in that topic if you want to reach out them for some marketing opportunities or find out what their strategy is. It also gives you a list of related keywords to expand your search even more.
Hubspot Blog Topic Generator
Hubspot has a ton of free templates and resources for bloggers and businesses. One of their great tools is a blog topic generator. You can enter in 5 keywords and it will automatically generate a bunch of different blog post ideas you can use.
Quora
I love Quora even though the user interface confuses me at times. I think it’s such a great place to find blog topics because you have a huge wealth of questions to answer from any topic. Even better that you can publish blog posts on it and link them to it. It’s a great way to find topics to write about and market yourself.
Google Trends
Honestly what doesn’t Google do? Google trends is a free and easy way to discover what’s being said about any topic. I also use this for myself to find out where my name is being mentioned without me otherwise knowing. You can set it for daily or weekly updated on any keyword search.
I’ve had mixed success with Reddit, it’s hard to self promote on it and sometimes you don’t always find great content to blog about depending on the subreddit for your niche. But it’s a great place to look if you have something popular and well liked to blog about.
Social Media Groups
Facebook and Linkedin are invaluable for their groups feature. Not only is it a great way to create a community around your blog or product, but you can use other groups to drive traffic to your blog while generating new ideas for blog posts. By seeing what other people in your industry are talking about, you can easily have so many new blog ideas in just half an hour.
Ubersuggest
Ubersuggest is similar to Right Relevance in that it suggests articles about any given keyword. What’s nice about Ubersuggest is that it also shows you the ranking of the article so that based on your keywords, you can figure out the likely hood of your article appearing in search rankings and if you can beat the competition or not.
Twitter Lists/Tweet Deck
Using Twitter lists and Tweet Deck is another great way to generate ideas. By sorting accounts you follow into lists and sections, you can easily see what’s being talked about in real time. This is especially great if you want to be one of the first to blog about a current event or topic.
I personally love Pinterest because it’s just a great tool for social media marketing and for finding blog posts. A lot of bloggers use the site now to promote their content so if you’re searching for inspiration, try Pinterest! It’s easy to save those inspiring pins to a board and you can keep them on a secret board if you want to keep your idea source private.
Linkedin Trending
Linkedin trending doesn’t have a lot of articles related to my blog but it’s a great way to stay up to date with current events. Those events might even inspire something related to your blog. You can even get creative and tie your niche and the topic together somehow or have a day where you write about something off topic.
Topic specific newsletters
Newsletters are a wealth of great ideas when you remember to actually read them. They keep me in touch with what’s going on in my industry and community. I also learn about a bunch of exciting events and learn new ideas.
Medium
I actually really love Medium for it’s variety of publications and writers. It’s another great marketing tool for your blog, but by reading what other people are writing about, you can put your own twist on something. Staying well read is one of the key growths to being a writer of any kind. If we want to write well, we need to be reading. And reading other blogs and commenting is a great way to stay connected with your industry and make new friends as well in your niche.
Podcasts
My favorite time to listen to podcasts are late at night right before bed. I don’t like watching TV because the light is distracting, but podcasts serve the same purpose. There’s also a podcast for every topic and idea out there. So if you’re looking for ideas, start listening to podcasts. You’ll be sure to discover something you can have an unique angle on.
Google News/RSS Feeds
I really love Google News for the same way I love Google Trends. Like Google trends, you can set a filter for any keyword and it will bring up the latest news stories about it. In the same way, RSS feeds like Feedly provide the same service. A great way to stay in the know and gather ideas for your next blog post.
